Clarifying and Directing Upstate Forever’s Work
Throughout this year, our Board and staff have been involved in a strategic planning initiative that reevaluated our programmatic structure. Recently the Board decided to retain “Land Trust” and to approve two new program names: “Sustainable Communities” and “Clean Air and Water.” The names do not indicate any significant change in our mission or in the nature or scope of our work, but they do better define and clarify our efforts. For example, work taking place in the Spartanburg office fits under Sustainable Communities, while the Saluda-Reedy watershed project belongs under Clean Air and Water.
We didn’t stop there. For each of the three programs, the Board approved Vision Statements and Five Year Goals. The Vision Statements are just that–overarching visions for our region. The Five Year Goals are specific goals that will guide our work through 2011; however, we hasten to add that with our current staff and resources, we cannot possibly achieve them all. Nonetheless, having the goals in place should greatly improve our chances of obtaining additional financial support to make them a reality.
