News from the Board

Owen Named New Chairman Of Upstate Forever

Carlton Owen has been named the new Chairman of the Upstate Forever Board of Directors. He replaces Dr. Dave Hargett, who is leaving the Board after serving as its Chairman since the organization was founded in late 1998.

  Carlton Owen

Carlton is the founder and principal of The Environmental Edge, LLC, a consulting firm whose mission is to “bring business and the environment together to benefit both.” He worked at Champion International Corporation for over 10 years where, as Vice President of Forest Policy, he was one of the nation’s leading experts on sustainable forestry practices. He also directed two nonprofit conservation organizations, American Forest Foundation and the Mississippi Wildlife Federation.

Carlton is Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and recently stepped down as President of the University of Georgia’s Warnell School of Forestry Advisory Council. He is also an adjunct faculty member at Clemson University in the Department of Forestry. Carlton holds a bachelor’s degree in forest management and a master’s degree in wildlife ecology, both from Mississippi State University.

Dave is a principal with The Pinnacle Consulting Group, an environmental management and information technology company. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of Friends of Reedy River, Inc. and currently serves on the South Carolina Wildlife Federation Board. Dave has been the leader in building community interest and support for the Lake Consestee project.

Owen said, “I can’t imagine where Upstate Forever would be right now without the leadership that Dave has provided over the last four and a half years. I aspire to be same kind of leader. It’s a hard act to follow.”

In addition, he serves on the boards of the Greenville Literacy Association, the United Way of Greenville County, and the Palmetto Society.

A graduate of Cornell University, Tom received his bachelor of science in mechanical engineering in 1968, and in 1974, he received his MBA from Harvard University.

Tom’s extensive experience in public accounting, combined with his dedication to the preservation of the Upstate, will be a tremendous asset to us.

We are also pleased to welcome Neal Workman to our Board. Neal, a resident of Walhalla and the president and CEO of Trehel Corporation, holds a bachelor of arts in economics from Wofford College. He began his career with Milliken Company, and after three years, he accepted a position with Walhalla Builders, a residential development company. Vector Corporation, a commercial construction company, grew out of Walhalla Builders and for the next nine years, he served as its executive vice president. In 1982, he founded Trehel Corporation, an unlimited licensed general contracting firm located in Clemson.
