 Sherry Barrett works primarily in our Spartanburg office with responsibility for implementing a grant from the Mary Black Foundation dedicated to utilizing land use planning to improve public health. As a part of the Upstate Forever team she also works on other strategies and initiatives to achieve our organization’s vision and goals.
Sherry earned a Master of Landscape Architecture from Virginia Tech with a focus on community design. The American Society of Landscape Architects awarded her a Certificate of Merit in recognition of the body of work accomplished in her program. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of Georgia and is working on an Advanced Geographic Information Systems Certificate at Greenville Technical College.
As Program Coordinator for the Community Design Assistance Center at Virginia Tech, Sherry worked on conceptual community design projects including greenway routing, downtown streetscape and town entry designs, and land-use analysis and design proposals. As a Landscape Designer with Site Design, Inc. in Greenville, she prepared permit packages for large-scale planned unit developments and mixed-use projects as well as site-scale commercial, residential, corporate and public space projects. She is a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects and Congress for the New Urbanism.
Sherry first came to Upstate Forever as a member and volunteer. Originally from Georgia, she and her husband Richard lived in New England, the Midwest, North Carolina and Virginia and raised two children before establishing roots as empty nesters in the Upstate.
