Nancy
Eisen Fitzer received her B.A. magna cum laude in biological anthropology
from Harvard and also studied natural resource management and rainforest
ecology in Australia. Arriving in South Carolina in 1992, Nancy
organized community service projects in partnership with schools,
parks, and shelters for City Year, a youth corps program in Columbia.
This work sparked an interest in addressing the root causes of urban
problems. After reading the book “The Geography of Nowhere”
by James Howard Kunstler, she was inspired to enter the Master of
City and Regional Planning program at Clemson, from which she graduated
in 1998. She was recognized as the outstanding student in her class
both years.
While
at Clemson, Nancy and her husband, Matt, fell in love with the Upstate
and decided to settle here permanently. Their household has since
grown to include three children, a dog, a fish, and a millipede.
Among
other volunteer endeavors, Nancy is a primary organizer of two annual
events: the Alternative Gift Fair and the Martin Luther King Day
Celebration for Kids. She is thrilled to be able to combine her
passions for the natural environment and the built environment in
her work with Upstate Forever.
