John Tynan
Co-Director of Clean Air & Water Program
John Tynan is a Project Manager for Upstate Forever's Clean Air and Water Program. Since 2006, he has worked to address the impacts of land use change on water quality in the Upstate and has recently begun to work with Upstate Forever's air and climate change efforts. He leads Upstate Forever's Mountain Stream project, which includes the formation of a Blue Ridge Stream Stewardship Network, a coalition of community organized and directed stream watch groups. John devotes a portion of his time to organizing workshops and presentations across the region to build general awareness about the threats of climate change and the economic opportunities associated with proactively addressing the climate crisis.
John became familiar with the Upstate as a student at Furman University and later as an intern with Friends of the Reedy River as he worked on a variety of river and wetland conservation projects. John holds a BS from Furman University and a Master of Environmental Management degree from the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University.
In his spare time, John enjoys kayaking, biking, and hiking with his wife Mary Virginia and dog Guinness.
