On the ground restoration work is the best way to address historical activities that have resulted in loss of wildlife habitat in our watersheds, led to streambank erosion, and caused water quality problems. One such project that Upstate Forever has completed is the restoration of nearly 3,000 feet of the South Saluda River. The river had been channelized and straightened as a result of the construction and straightening of Highway 11 near Cleveland, SC. This led to the degradation of trout habitat in one of the few remaining rivers that could support this important resource.
Along with Naturaland Trust, NRCS, SC DNR, and Foothills RC&D, Upstate Forever installed 15 cross vanes in this stretch of river and stabilized and restored public access areas to the river. Despite opposition from misinformed individuals, the project was completed in September of 2011 and has resulted in a 3,000 foot stretch of the South Saluda that has a diversity of habitat for fish, stable banks that are protecting riparian buffers, and responsible public access areas for fishermen. The project is a huge success and we are proud to have been a part of it.
