Abbeville County is rich in history and in natural resources. Founded in 1785, the county is the “Birthplace and Deathbed of the Confederacy” and claims John C. Calhoun as a native son.
Abbeville County covers 508 square miles and encompasses Calhoun Falls State Park and Marina, Richard Russell Dam, and Sumter National Forest. Historically, Abbeville County includes the Abbeville Opera House and historic district, the Burk-Stark Mansion (circa 1841), and Erskine College, located in the town of Due West.
Abbeville County Government
In Abbeville County, Upstate Forever is monitoring planning and development issues and pursuing conservation agreements with private landowners. We currently protect over 1,100 acres of farmland in the county. Abbeville County was included in a landmark 2008 study conducted by Clemson University’s Strom Thurmond Institute and released by Upstate Forever that projects the extent of future growth if development patterns and policies remain unchanged.
