Anderson County has maintained a way of life centered on small-town friendliness and low congestion. The county has been able to merge its historic past with a business-minded present. The industries of Anderson include automotive products, metal products, and industrial machinery. Its 230 manufacturers have led the way for the theme of “Making News… Making Progress” that has developed Anderson County into the state’s number one capital investment location. Its historic significance is epitomized by Pendleton, an entire town on the national register of historic places. The county is also renowned for the inviting Lake Hartwell, its state parks, and waterfalls.
In Anderson County, Upstate Forever protects over 1,600 acres of important lands with conservation agreements, and an active volunteer outreach group informs fellow landowners about the benefits of land protection. In 2008, the Anderson County Stormwater Symposium educated more than 100 local officials and development professionals about stormwater management issues, and was followed by a three-session Stormwater Speaker Series in 2010. An audit of county pavement standards was released in 2007, and a four-session Low Impact Development lunch series in 2009 brought notable speakers to Anderson to discuss mitigating the impacts of development. Upstate Forever assisted in efforts to oppose a new and unnecessary construction and debris landfill in northern Anderson County and to reduce the amount of water being released from Lake Hartwell. Currently, Upstate Forever is partnering with the Rocky River Conservancy to develop a nature park 1.5 miles from downtown Anderson on a site that will serve as a hub for a number of future greenways.
