Cherokee
County
Cherokee County was formed in 1897 from parts of York, Union, and Spartanburg Counties, and named after the resident Native American tribe. It is occasionally called the “Old Iron District” because of the importance of iron mining in the area up until the Civil War. It is situated directly between the Greenville-Spartanberg and Charlotte metropolitan areas, with easy access to the international airports both areas boast. Gaffney, the county seat, is home to the famous “Peachoid” water tower and has a wide variety of shopping opportunities. The nationally known Peach Festival is held there each July.
