Greenville County is the most populous county in South Carolina. Its origins centered on textile manufacturing, which developed along the many streams and rivers in the county. Over the past thirty years, Greenville County has diversified and expanded to become the commercial, cultural, and recreational heart of the Upstate. It is the home of many international and national corporate offices. The county boasts such attractions as Falls Park , the Peace Center, Caesars Head , and the BI-LO Center . Sports enthusiasts can enjoy the Greenville Drive, a Minor League affiliate of the Red Sox, which plays in a downtown stadium replicating Boston’s Fenway Park.

What is Upstate Forever doing in Greenville County?

Upstate Forever has been a leading voice for keeping Greenville County green. Our partnership with the Home Builders Association of Greenville in constructing “Upstate House,” the first EarthCraft-certified green home in South Carolina, inspired several local builders to construct all of their homes in accordance with the EarthCraft standard. We followed that with a green renovation demonstration project, transforming a deteriorating 1916 building into our main office, for which we have received LEED certification at the highest level (Platinum). Our Land Trust program protects 41 properties encompassing more than 5,000 acres of critical farm, forest, and historic lands in the county, including several “missing pieces” in the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area. Upstate Forever has also worked closely with Greenville County and municipal governments on forward-thinking comprehensive plans, a new hospitality tax to fund parks and recreation facilities, and improved regulations for tree protection, parking lot landscaping, parking standards, pavement standards, and stormwater management. We played an essential role in securing and opening the popular Swamp Rabbit Trail connecting downtown Greenville to Travelers Rest. A successful stormwater symposium in Greenville County in 2007 kicked off our continuing work with local officials and the development community to promote Low Impact Development practices, which save money and protect water quality. We brokered an agreement with the Cliffs Communities to reduce the impacts of the golf course and wastewater system at its Mountain Park development on the North Saluda River and are actively supporting a trout habitat enhancement project on the South Saluda River.

Upstate Forever promotes sensible growth and the protection of
special places in the Upstate region of South Carolina.
