Greenwood County is an economic leader in South Carolina that has witnessed diversified industrial growth as major corporations have moved to the area. These include Velux and Fuji Photo Film’s North American Manufacturing complex. Since the 1970’s, Greenwood County has been home to the Greenwood Genetics Center , which has delivered genetic services to the Upstate and Midlands. In recent years, Greenwood has seen an increase in the number of homes built for vacation and retirement as people discover the beauty of the county’s lakeshore, including Lake Greenwood State Park. Greenwood’s natural assets are showcased each June during the South Carolina Festival of Flowers.
Greenwood County Government
Greenwood County has been the focus of much of Upstate Forever’s water quality research and advocacy. We coordinated the work of the Saluda-Reedy Watershed Consortium, a broad based coalition of universities, nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and private businesses which conducted a wide range of research on Lake Greenwood and its watershed. This multi-year effort culminated in the 2009 publication of the “Saving Lake Greenwood” report, which details current threats to the lake and strategies for managing, protecting and restoring this vital resource. One of these strategies was recently achieved when the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control issued permits for all wastewater treatment plants on the Saluda River that will reduce phosphorus discharges through an innovative trading system. Our staff continues to disseminate the results of the Saving Lake Greenwood report through numerous public meetings and events. In addition, Upstate Forever has hosted a Watershed Leaders Forum and conducted an audit of pavement standards in Greenwood County. The county was also included in a significant 2008 study conducted by Clemson University researchers in conjunction with Upstate Forever that predicts future development patterns based on current growth trends.
