Considered to be the gateway to the region, Laurens County welcomes visitors to the Upstate. Organized in 1785, Laurens County is named for Henry Laurens of Charleston who was the president of the Continental Congress during the Revolutionary War. With the natural resources of the Upstate, Laurens County was established as an area centered on textiles. Today, textiles have been replaced by a mix of industries, including plastics, automobiles, and advanced manufacturing. Its newest area of industrial growth is the ClintonPark Corporate Center. Laurens County is also home to the Musgrove Mill State Historic Site.
Laurens County Government
Upstate Forever holds easements permanently protecting nearly 900 acres of important private lands in Laurens County. The county was included in the groundbreaking 2008 Clemson University study predicting future growth patterns in our region. In 2006, Upstate Forever conducted an audit of pavement-related standards in the county. We also coordinated the work of the Saluda-Reedy Watershed Consortium, a multi-year effort that culminated in the 2009 publication of the “Saving Lake Greenwood” report, which details threats to the lake and strategies for managing, protecting and restoring this vital resource. Efforts continue to implement the report’s strategies through our Saving Lake Greenwood campaign. We also assisted the City of Clinton with their long-term planning process. Upstate Forever has recently been awarded a grant from DHEC to work with interested landowners to implement practices to reduce nutrient runoff into Walnut Creek and the Reedy River.
