Organized in 1785, Spartanburg County has developed from its early days as a frontier trading post to a textile center and more recently to the home of more per capita international investment than anywhere else in the country. Centered along the intersection of two major interstates, the area has become host to more than 110 international firms, including the American headquarters of BMW manufacturing company and Milliken Company. Spartanburg County is also rich in the preservation of natural wonders and historical sites, including Cowpens National Battlefield, Walnut Grove Plantation, and Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve.
Spartanburg County Government
In Spartanburg County, home to one of Upstate Forever’s offices, we have conducted several important studies, including an Active Living Assessment, Rapid Parks Assessment, Big Box Inventory and Pavement Standards Audit, which have been used to improve policies and ordinances. In 2010, we released a Special Places Inventory for Spartanburg County, which identifies six Conservation Focus Areas. We led the successful effort to stop a harmful mega-landfill project in the Enoree area and we support local household hazardous waste collection and recycling programs. Our Land Trust protects over 1,800 acres in the county. Upstate Forever advocated for the passage of a hospitality tax to fund new and improved parks, and we are currently raising awareness of the link between public health and the built environment through a grant from the Mary Black Foundation. We educated the public about air pollution through “The Air We Breathe” campaign and conducted two successful stormwater speakers series between 2009 and 2011. We are currently working with local governments to establish a bus rapid transit route along U.S. 29 between Spartanburg, Greer, and Greenville.
