Union County was named for Union Church, erected in 1765 to serve the predominantly Scotch-Irish settlers from Virginia and Pennsylvania. The county was the scene of several significant battles during the Revolutionary War.
Today, the county boasts a population of over 30,000 people and a growing economy. It is located within an hour of the Greenville-Spartanburg, Columbia, and Charlotte metropolitan areas and is convenient to I-85 and I-26. The area contains a wealth of natural resources, including long stretches of the Broad and Tyger Rivers, five lakes, and 55,000 acres of preserved land in the Sumter National Forest. History buffs can tour the home and gardens of the antebellum Rose Hill Plantation State Park.
Union County Government
Upstate Forever’s Land Trust Program holds the first conservation agreement ever signed in Union County; along with one other property, our organization protects more than 800 acres in the county. We secured funding to add Union County to the groundbreaking growth projection study conducted by Clemson University; the Union County portion of the study was released in 2010.
