Hold Duke accountable for planned gas plant

Duke Energy is proposing to build a 1,400 Megawatt (MW) combined-cycle gas plant in Anderson County — making it one of the largest new gas-fired power facilities in the Southeast.

The plant would be constructed on nearly 200 acres at Highway 81 South and True Temper Road, just miles from homes, schools, businesses, and places of worship. If approved, construction could begin in summer 2027, and the plant could start serving customers by early 2031.

While Duke Energy claims the Anderson Gas Plant will leverage existing transmission infrastructure and reduce water usage, critical details — including the total project cost — have not been disclosed. Despite these public statements, the construction of new gas infrastructure, including the need for additional Rights of Way for pipelines and power lines, poses significant risks.

These projects can imperil sensitive natural resources, degrade floodways, and encroach on private property, raising serious concerns about long-term environmental and community impacts.

Next Steps

Duke Energy will begin conducting community outreach and engagement. The proposed plant will need approval from the SC Public Service Commission, which regulates electric utilities and will require disclosure of the project cost, alternatives, and environmental impacts. The plant will also require air permits and water permits from state and federal agencies.

Each of these steps needs public input to ensure residential health and community interests are protected.
