Grassroots Community Outreach

Grassroots Outreach

Creating positive change together

Our Land Planning & Policy team hosts advocacy trainings and provides hands-on support at the neighborhood level to advance local initiatives that align with UF’s advocacy goals and priorities.

We welcome inquiries from neighborhood leaders, residents, and community partners in Greenville County. Please contact Land Policy Grassroots Specialist Tre’Dessa Smalls to explore neighborhood planning-related issues, ideas for future advocacy trainings, and other opportunities to collaborate.

Haynie-Sirrine Neighborhood

A.J. Whittenberg  Elementary

We are engaging students in the A.J. Whittenberg ECO Kids Garden Club afterschool program about the importance of open space and trees. As part of this outreach in 2024, students wrote letters to Greenville County Council sharing why open space is important to them. In 2025, we guided the students through a “thankful trees" activity. Students created paper trees with each leaf recalling a reason to be thankful for trees. Children are the future!

LiveWell Greenville Safe Routes to School

Upstate Forever plays a supporting role along with other community partners in this ongoing project to complete walk audits in the vicinity of schools along the White Horse Road Corridor; evaluate student walking routes for safety issues; and identify funding sources to address walking safety.

Haynie-Sirrine Neighborhood

We first engaged to support the neighborhood during the 2024 City of Greenville-led Haynie-Sirrine Master Plan Update. We attended meetings, met with neighborhood leaders, and distributed flyers door-to-door to help raise awareness and encourage residents’ participation. We continue to support the neighborhood on master plan implementation.
