Meet the Team: Land Conservation Operations Associate Alison Miller

March 16th, 2022

It's time to meet the team! Each month, we introduce you to a member of the Upstate Forever staff through a few rapid fire questions. This month, get to know Land Conservation Operations Associate Alison Miller.

Why is Upstate Forever's work important to you?
I’ve loved the outdoors for as long as I can remember, but becoming a mom made me realize just how important it is to preserve all of our natural spaces so that future generations can continue enjoying them. Many people don’t realize that land conservation isn’t limited to acres of farmland or uninhabitable forests; it includes city parks, outdoor event venues, summer camps, and other spaces that enrich our lives. Upstate Forever works to protect all of that and more.

What are you most excited about in your new role?
I’m excited to explore how we can use data to support our Outreach and Stewardship efforts. I want to look beyond data reporting to more in-depth analysis of what contributes to conservation success and how to effectively administer land management plans.

What hobbies do you enjoy?
Besides hiking? I am really into paddle boarding! Lake Jocassee is our favorite spot in the Upstate to take the boards for a day. We also like to visit at least one new country every year. Traveling expands my horizons and creates new pathways to understanding others and enjoying everything life has to offer. It’s so important to remember there’s a big world to explore.

What’s your favorite quote or words to live by?
“Just send it.” In other words – be spontaneous! Some of life’s most memorable experiences can come from taking a chance.

More about Alison

A New England native, Alison’s love of nature started with annual family camping trips as a child and has followed her through all five states that she has called "home." This affinity grew even stronger after she got a taste of land management as a volunteer with the Colorado 14ers Initiative while she was a student at the High Mountain Institute in Leadville, CO. Alison is a graduate of St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY, and a current MBA candidate at Clemson University.

Alison comes to Upstate Forever as a former paralegal and legal program coordinator. She provides process and project management support for both the Outreach and Stewardship sides of the Land Conservation team.

In her free time Alison can be found anywhere outside with her family — hiking, paddleboarding, snow skiing, or even picnicking in one of Greenville’s beautiful parks!
